An Atlanta man was arrested for slapping a stranger’s 2-year-old crying child in a Wal-Mart store on Monday.

According to reports, Roger Stephens, 61, was in the same aisle as Sonya Matthews, who was with her weeping toddler, and said “if you don’t shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you.”

A few moments later, Stephens followed her to another aisle, then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her across the face four or five times. He told the mother, “See, I told you I would shut her up,” according to the report Man slaps child in walmart.

He apologized to the mother, but a witness held him until security arrived. Stephens was charged with felony cruelty to children and was held without bond.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Undeterred by the miniscule odds, people were lining up Friday for a chance to score the estimated $333 million Mega Millions jackpot.

The odds really are microscopic. You have a one in 175,711,536 chance of winning. That’s a 0.0000006% chance.

Still, since tickets are just $1, and the jackpot payout is double the odds of winning, if a person bought all 176 million combinations, he or she would be guaranteed to win at least $157 million.

So playing the Mega Millions Har on Friday could make sense … if you could afford to spend $176 million on tickets. Bear in mind, that only works if there is a single winner who doesn’t take a lump sum payout.

The 12-state lottery anticipates hundreds of millions tickets to be purchased before the 11 p.m. ET drawing Friday night for what will be at least the third-largest U.S. lottery jackpot of all time. The New York Mega Millions branch said it expects ticket sales to eclipse $1 million per hour starting with the noon hour on Friday.

“This is a huge jackpot,” said Jennifer Givner, spokeswoman for the New York Mega Millions. “There’s a lot of excitement about it, and we probably made a conservative estimate of the jackpot.”

Mega Millions guarantees its jackpot, so it could go even higher, depending on the number of ticket sales. In fact, Mega Millions raised its jackpot estimate by $8 million on Friday based on stronger-than-expected sales.

Sander Sharman, who owns the newsstand on 9th Avenue and 57th Street in New York said Mega Millions sales have been overwhelming. The line for lottery tickets was out the door.

“It’s never been anything like this,” said Sharman just before 1 p.m. ET on Friday. “We usually do 1,200 sales in a day, and already we have 4,200.”

All of that business is good news for retailers like Sharman. Lottery retailers get a 6% commission on all sales and a $10,000 bonus for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

How it works. After the drawing, the 12 participating states begin to count up their tickets and check to see if there is a match. Winners get about 50% of the pool, with roughly 35% divided between the state coffers and 15% going to lottery retailers and administrative costs.

If there is a winner or multiple winners, the states will likely know by early Saturday morning, according to Givner. If not, the money is returned to the pool and the game continues with an even higher jackpot.

That’s been the case for the last 14 bi-weekly drawings — no one has hit the nail on the head. But some have come close: On Tuesday, 17 Pepsi Bottling Group employees in Albany, N.Y., split a ticket and guessed right on five of the five numbers. But they missed the final Megaball number, and split just $250,000.

The last jackpot winner was on July 7, when a former New York City Transit employee won $133 million. The jackpot then went back to its base of $12 million.

Winners can choose between a lump-sum cash payment and annuity payments. If the $333 million jackpot winner chooses the annual payment plan, he or she would receive $12.8 million per year, before taxes, for the next 26 years.

The lump sum is calculated using the present value of U.S. Treasurys based on Friday’s market rates. Using that formula, Mega Millions estimated that the winner will take home $210 million before taxes if he or she chooses the lump sum option.

The vast, vast majority of winners choose the lump sum payments, according to Givner.

Jack Peragine, a 54-year old New York doorman said he hopes he gets the chance to decide how he collects his winnings.

“I buy lottery tickets here and there, but I figured I’d definitely get one today,” he said. “It’s like the [New York] lottery slogan says, ‘Hey, you never know.’”

The 12 states that participate in the Mega Millions are California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

Ben Smith, director of program management for Xbox Live, sent us an email after we expressed concern over some quotes he’d given about the Xbox 360’s Netflix service. Following up, we asked Smith if Netflix was putting the kibosh on Microsoft implementing the search feature to continue driving customers to its site for that functionality. He stated that Netflix has been a great partner to work with, and that the company hasn’t applied pressure to prevent a search function from being added to the Xbox version.

So, why not add the search feature into the latest update? Why emulate the video store presentation that Netflix has been hammering out of business? Smith deftly avoided the question: “We have not yet brought a full-fledged search feature to the console yet. Like many things it’s an area that’s interesting to us for potential future releases but we don’t have anything to announce right now.”

We were also curious if Netflix was cutting into the Xbox Video Marketplace, to which Smith stated that the two have “co-existed well.” He notes that the different payment models and content catalogs service different types of users.

Given that Xbox 360 “power users” can access advanced functions using the Xbox Guide, we wondered if such functionality could be implemented, thus leaving casual users with the NXE functionality. Smith responded, “Our goal is to make experiences great and easy to use for all users.”

Oh well, maybe with the next update we’ll get lucky.

McDaniel is a soft spoken giant who hails from the desert region of Arizona only to ironically make a home in the tundra of Minnesota. A low key player who refuted the limelight yet rather let his actions, leadership, and tenacity speak the volumes it did for the consummate pro.

An individual who, aside from football, put the community and his time with children first throughout his long career, and then made those children his new career after his time on the field.

Professionally, there are few that have come along and played Guard with as much speed, agility and tenacity as McDaniels did; there are fewer that achieved the monumental accomplishments McDaniels did.

All Rookie in 1988, 12 Pro Bowl selections AND starts, seven-time First Team All-Pro, as well as 202 consecutive starts between the years 1990 to 2001 without a single missed practice during the same time period.

In 1994 McDaniel’s forged line held opponents to one sack every 22.7 pass attempt.

In 1998, while playing for the incredibly explosive Viking Offense that registered a team record 556 points, McDaniels led the way for the gruesome two-some rushing attack of Leroy Hoard and Robert Smith, and it was that year the tandem combined for 1,666 yards.

Trust me, anyone who watched that line with those two guys will instantly recall McDaniel’s contribution both as a blocker, and as a fullback; something the Vikings also utilized with the endlessly talented McDaniels.

That 1998 season was the pinnacle of McDaniel’s career; he defined that O-line and paved the way for the explosive attack of the Vikings while working in unison with his fellow lineman to make getting to the quarterback as easy as breaking through a brick wall with a rubber mallet.

The O-line that year gave up no more than 20 sacks; they helped paved the way for a team total 1,936 yards on the ground and 17 rushing touchdowns.

He afforded Cunningham a crystal clear path to see the field and a cavernous pocket to relax in that allowed the passing game to yield 61 touchdowns in addition to 4,492 passing yards out of 533 attempts; a 61.4 percent completion rate.

The Chief Justice will then administer the Judicial Oath in the East Conference Room before a small gathering of Judge Sotomayor’s family and friends.

The Judicial Oath ceremony in the East Conference Room will be open to pool coverage. A formal investiture ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 8, at 2 p.m. at a special sitting of the Court in the Courtroom. So, you are ditching millions of dollars in guaranteed money for the CHANCE that you would get picked above where you are right now, even though you wont be playing the whole year? Are you fucking bat shit crazy? Why would you even consider this? Even though the draft pick signing honor system is ridiculous, its still a widely accepted system to prevent situations like this.

Per pro football talk this whole thing may be an agenda put on by Crabtree’s agent to get things done the way he wants in the future, but in reality, its damaged (possibly destroyed) any positive feelings the niners had towards Crabtree.

When it comes to the cards, this could also damage just about any chances that Crabtree has of maintaining any value headway he has made. Bad for us. I know I had high hopes for his potential, but now I just see another possible Maurice Clarett type draft dilemma.

Although I know the Niners will probably cave in some what, but the damage is done. Too bad for that.

Just when we were starting to believe in this thing called Bing, you go messing with the search results.

“Why are Macs so expensive.”

That’s right. You’re not hallucinating. That was the top response on Bing to a question about the price of Windows.

But it’s not just the top link. The rest of the links on the first search page don’t get much better. There is one link about the price of vinyl windows (actual windows that you look out), one on why Windows hosting providers are so expensive, and one about fish. The five other links on page one are about the expensive price of Macs. The Windows client OS is not even mentioned.

If Microsoft is going to resort to blocking and self-protection with their search engine, they could at least be subtle. This is about as subtle as a machine gun.

There is evidence that Microsoft is aware of the Bing results shenanigans and has made adjustments. An article written two weeks ago on an Internet marketing site called out Bing for censoring search results. The article highlighted two phrases – “Why is Microsoft Word so expensive?” and “Is Microsoft Evil?” – that were bringing up censored results.

The first of the search results about the Microsoft Word question linked to a page about how expensive Manhattan is (Is Microsoft competing with Manhattan now?). The top responses to the “Is Microsoft Evil?” question were, get this, a link to a New York Times story about whether or not Google is considered evil, a link about proxy servers, and a link to a story about Microsoft being charitable. Wow.

But those results have magically changed. As of today (August 5) search results for these phrases actually seem uncensored. The random Manhattan link is still there, but it’s under three links about Microsoft Word. Not that the links are actually helpful, but open-ended questions are difficult in search engines. As for the “Is Microsoft Evil?” search, the Google story is now gone and all the current search results address the question at hand: “Is Microsoft Evil?”

Is Bing evil? Not yet. So far, I like its organized interface, but I’m finding its search results to be sloppy. Sloppy is one thing, but sloppy and censored? That’s when evil starts lurking. Keep it fair, Microsoft.

In fact, he might still be at Olds Park if it weren’t for WILX taking a chance on a young man with basically no TV experience.

His dreams of becoming ESPN’s next star of SportsCenter started as a sports reporter in June of 2000. Two and a half years later, that dream turned into becoming the next star of “Today” on NBC when WILX took an even bigger chance by making him the new weekday morning news anchor. In January of 2005, he was promoted once again to evening anchor of the WILX-produced newscasts at 5:30 and 10 on FOX 47.

Viewers again had to flip the channel to find Jason in March 2008, as he moved back to Channel 10 to co-anchor the 11 p.m. newscast with Adela Uchida.

Shockingly, covering a budget crisis isn’t quite as exciting as covering an MSU Final Four run, but you’d never know it watching Jason. He loves the daily challenge of making local news fun to watch, which is tough considering the news isn’t always heart-warming. But, Jason thinks ‘informing’ and ‘entertaining’ do not have to be enemies in a newscast. If it seems like he’s having fun doing the news, that’s because he is.

Before working for the Lansing Lugnuts, Jason graduated from Michigan State University and is proud to say he’s a Lansing native.

We Upper West Siders need to get creative when it comes to getting our food truck fix. I’ve occasionally seen the Treat Truck on Broadway, but mostly the city’s new food vans leave the UWS out in the cold. In fact, if you live north of Columbus circle–other than the reliably delicious Super Taco on 96th between Broadway and West End–you’re pretty much out of luck when it comes to truck cuisine. Until food truck purveyors discover the Upper West Side, there are neighborhood nooks you can turn to. Take Levain Bakery on West 74th Street. Levain is bigger than a food truck–but not by much. You reach the teeny place down a short flight of stairs. The smell of sugar and butter hits you full on before you even step inside the diminutive bakery. There, you’ll find cookies, scones, cakes and the like.

I gobbled up an oatmeal raisin scone. Buttery and flaky, it was delicious. It didn’t take much to convince myself that with all those whole grains, I was downing a healthy snack.

Bless WowInsider’s heart (or Wow.com as they’re now called). They are a great source of information. They compile so much from so many sources. It’s just a shame when they miss little things. Like they’re little post about Essential addons for raid leaders. The very first mod they list is for Deadly Boss Mods (good). And as is mentioned, it’s kind of a necessity for all raiders. But the most important part of that suite for a raid leader doesn’t come from Curse as is linked on their site.
Oh no… the most important part comes from the Deadly Boss Mods downloads page. They’re two extra packages called “Spell Timers” and “Raid Lead Tools”. Let’s see the description, shall we?

Spell Timers
“DBM-SpellTimers is a small but powerful addon that uses DBM timers to show spell cooldowns from raid members. It is fully configurable through a simple GUI so you can easily add new spells.”

Want to know when Heroism is up? Or how about who cast Rebirth, and who’s still on cooldown? Or how about anything with a significant cooldown? (Yep… even portals. lol.) Yeah, kind of important for a Raid Leader to know. Go get this one.

“Raid Lead Tools uses the DBM API (especially the kill/pull detection) to manage your raid and DKP. You can export tracked raids to eqDKP with just a few clicks!”

Now, I’ve actually used CT Raid Tracker for this functionality. (Found here… used to be hosted on Curse.) But it sure sounds like a useful Raid Leader Mod to me.

Point being though…. the Spell Timers are WAY better than having to ask, “Whose Battle Rez is up?”
Edit: I didn’t even mention the best part of these additional mods. Not sure which one it is, but one of them gives a mass invite to all guildies. Saves a ton of time when you have exactly 25 (or less) on.

It’s become one of the most talked-about book series in history and has turned Stephenie Meyer into a literary star.

But now, the authorship of the last Twilight book, Breaking Dawn, is being called into question.

Writer Jordan Scott has sent a cease-and-desist order to Meyer’s publisher, claiming the book’s passages were lifted from Scott’s book, The Nocturne.

Both sides have issued statements.

Scott’s attorney said in a statement:

“Jordan Scott regularly posted passages and chapters to her website. In reviewing Breaking Dawn, we found a number of instances where the text, characters and storyline contain substantial similarities to Scott’s original work.”

The Hachette Book Group released this statement:

“The claim that Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer somehow infringes on an alleged book by someone named Jordan Scott is completely without merit. Neither Stephenie Meyer nor her representatives had any knowledge of this writer or her supposed book prior to this claim. Ms. Scott’s attorney has yet to furnish us with a copy of the book to support this claim as requested. The world of The Twilight Saga and the stories within it are entirely the creation of Ms. Meyer. Her books have been a phenomenal sensation, and perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that other people may seek to ride the coattails of such success. This claim is frivolous and any lawsuit will be defended vigorously.”

Death driver Diane Schuler was drunk and high on marijuana when her wrong-way crash killed eight people on the Taconic State Parkway, sources told the Daily News on Tuesday.

Schuler’s blood alcohol level was .19 – about two-and-a-half times the legal limit, investigators confirmed Tuesday.

State Police first learned the toxicology results last Friday, but decided not to reveal the information until the victims were buried.

Police have given the findings to Schuler’s family and relatives of the three other victims of the July 26 crash, which killed 36-year-old Schuler, her 4-year-old daughter, and her three nieces, ages 9, 7 and 5. Her 5-year-old son survived.

Also killed were the three Yonkers men inside the SUV Schuler hit – Guy Bastardi, 49, his father Michael Bastardi,
81 and family friend Daniel Longo, 74.
“We’re beside ourselves,” said Robert Guzzo. His wife, Roseann Bastardi, is the sister and daughter of the victims.

Obama Joker Picture is showing up today in Los Angeles today. Numerous posters have popped up featuring President Barack Obama portrayed as Heath Ledger’s “Joker” character, from the Dark Knight Batman movie.

Well, I guess you would expect to see a movie reference, in Hollywood or LA.

As you can see…under the picture of Obama as the Joker, there is a large caption stating “Socialism.”

So far, no one has taken credit for the poster, and no one seems to have any idea who is behind them. The posters have been appearing in the Hollywood area in particular, though there have been sightings across Los Angeles. You would think it was an UFO…

There are unconfirmed rumors that this is a campaign by conservatives who are angry over Obama’s policies. So far, there is no evidence to indicate that is the case. There are also unconfirmed sightings in cities other than L.A.

Scientists from UCSD will leave this weekend to explore a massive, nasty blob in the North Pacific that has been reported being the size of Texas or larger.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers will leave Sunday aboard the New Horizon for a nearly three-week expedition to study the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The Scripps Environmental Accumulation of Plastic Expedition (SEAPLEX) will be the first of its kind, officials said, and will focus on, among other things, how the garbage patch is affecting ocean life and how fast it is accumulating. The exact size of the blob is unknown, something else the expedition will try to determine.

“There is little scientific information on the composition, extent and effects of the debris,” according to Scripps’ Web site.

What is known is that the blob is made up of accumulated trash, though the tiny pieces of plastic that make up the entire debris field are not detectable by planes overhead or satellites in space.

Gibbs was able to tell us that the president will meet at the White House with the entire Senate Democratic Caucus today. Maybe they’ll favor him with a chorus of “Happy Birthday.”

The notion of Senate Democrats visiting the White House on Obama’s birthday led to a moment of mirth in the occasional comedy show that is the White House briefing.
